Franzi and Andreas eloped with their two girls to Anna Maria Island, Florida. Franzi contacted me with the wish for professional photos at their elopement wedding. She wanted a German-speaking photographer mainly for her daughters, to make them feel more comfortable and understand the suggestions given.

Elopment Photography - Anna Maria Island

Well, Bingo! As a native German speaker, I was a great fit for them.  While it is usually unnecessary for photography, we communicate quite some during the shoot, and for some couples, it feels just right to be with somebody who understands them.

After our initial talk over the phone, Franzi told me the ceremony was scheduled for 11 am. I was a bit concerned. Why? Florida’s sun can be extreme, even in Winter and Spring.  Florida is hot most months of the year. The sun is standing so high that harsh shadows and washed-out skin tones make it necessary to use reflectors and fill flash. On top of all that,  we have to overshoot because of the many photos with twitched eyes.  It is by far not a favorable time to take photos on the beach in Florida.

I told her we could make it work but also wanted her to know the challenges of photographing during that time of the day. Unfortunately, she was unable to schedule the ceremony at a later time.  Because elopements without guests are often under two hours of photography, it was either doing traditional ceremony and post-ceremony photos or scheduling an “After Wedding” photo session. Photos were so important to her that she decided on a same-day photo shoot during the magic hour about 1-2 hours before sunset.

But what about the ceremony photos you may ask.  For her, they were not that important to be professionally photographed, and decided on amateur photos organized by her wedding planner. In a traditional wedding photo shoot, with all-day coverage,  there is usually a window to take pictures during the magic hour. With elopements and limited photo time, it is best to schedule the ceremony shortly before that to have the best light for photos.

I met with Franzi, Andreas, and the girls at the beach entrance to Bean Point Beach. The first thing after saying hello was: “We were so careful all the days before the wedding to not get sunburned.” But at their 11 am ceremony, it was so blazing hot that even with sunscreen on, they both got burned.  This is another reason why to avoid late-morning and midday weddings in Florida.

The early evening was perfect, not too hot and we did have overcast which is always great for photos. Everybody had so much fun during the After Wedding photo session. Franzi and Andreas felt so relaxed and the kids had a ball playing in the sand. Franzi told me this was the best decision of the day. They both were so thankful for my advice and for making this decision. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart.

Photo of heart in the Sand with fresh flowers at Elopement in Tarpon Springs

Roland and Maria from Austria celebrated their simple Elopement in Tarpon Springs, Howard Park. They vacationed in Florida and at the same time exchanged their wedding vows. They brought with them their three children to celebrate this special day.

For many couples that already have children or have been previously married, eloping is a great way to celebrate without all the fuzz. We often forget that not all wedding couples are in their 20s or early 30s. For more mature couples other things become more important than the extravagant wedding dress or spending a fortune on inviting hundreds of guests.

December 27th, 2023 was a cooler Florida winter day with a breeze. I was happy we did not have hot weather because I know that during Winter Holidays, the beaches can be crowded on a warm sunny day. I met with Maria and Roland directly at the beach. The area where the ceremony took place was under palm trees and their decoration was a simple heart in the sand with fresh flowers and two tiki torches. Maria walked down the beach with her stepdaughter and Roland waited with his two sons at the ceremony area. After the official part, we toasted with a bottle of sparkling cider. Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs is wonderful for a weekday elopement, with plenty of spots for great photos. The main wooded park is located before the causeway and man-made island and can be used for different photo backgrounds.

Bridal portrait at Cocoa Beach

Rikki and Justin Eloped from Utah to tie the knot on Cocoa Beach.  They celebrated their intimate simple ceremony on the beach without any guests.

Simply Beautiful
Cocoa Beach- tables Beach

I just love photographing Elopements. You actually get to spend time with the couple and have fun taking photos without a strict timeline. I always find that at intimate weddings couples feel so free in front of the camera. Maybe it is because they don’t have so much pressure, are often on vacay and just overall seem to enjoy the day without worries.

Rikki had her hair and makeup done at the hotel in Cocoa Beach. She looked stunning. They arrived together in their rental car and were super laid back. While Justin accompanied the officiant to the archway, Rikki and I did a few bridal portraits before the ceremony. I like to get the bridals done right when the bride is getting out of the AC. Because of Florida’s  humidity and wind especially on the beach, it is the best time for getting those photos under wrap. Rikki walked down a sandy pathway up on the beach to the ceremony setup. I liked the simple round arch with Eucalyptus and white roses. Rikki and Justin exchanged their vows and had plenty of fun during their ceremony. Once they were pronounced husband and wife we took many more photos at the beach. Congrats Rikki and Justin – Just hitched

Annika and Benedikt from Germany decided to elope in New Orleans. For them, the city has special meaning since Benedikt spent some time here before with a guest family some years ago.  They wanted their wedding to be simple without a lot of fuzz but fun. We had planned to meet the day of the wedding directly at Jackson Square where the ceremony took place. Little did we know that exactly at the time the ceremony was scheduled torrential rain poured down flooding the streets in minutes.

Rain on your wedding day brings good luck!
stay possitive

I rescued myself and my camera equipment to a corner bar at Jackson Square, ordered coffee, and grabbed my cell phone to call them. They also had to walk from the hotel to Jackson Square so I told them to wait it out and meet me at the bar. Once the rain calmed down, they made their way to the bar. They ordered some drinks and we had a little pre-wedding celebration.

The weather god was good to us and it stopped raining for the rest of the day. They were so relaxed that they would have exchanged their vows at the bar if necessary. Annika said: “Rain can’t stop us! “

We held the short and sweet ceremony at Jackson Square After their vows we did an impromptu photo tour of the French Quarter and surrounding areas.

Annika and Benedikt had their first dance as husband and wife on the streets of New Orleans the Big Easy way.

After our downtown tour, we decided to take a little drive to the city park for some more picturesque photos. I just love the old stone bridge under trees filled with Spanish Moss.  It felt like they just stepped out of a fairytale storybook.

We had a blast and it just shows that even if it rains on your wedding day you can turn it around by staying positive. After all, you a marrying the love of your life and that’s all that matters.

Longboat Key wedding photography photo showing bride with tropical hair wreath

Photo story of Renee and Chris’s tropical beach wedding on Longboat Key.  I met Renee for some pre-bridal portraits shortly before the ceremony.  I love the wooden boardwalk leading out to the beach for my portraiture. The lush greenery along the way and some welcomed shade provide a perfect setting for beautiful photos.

Renee looked absolutely stunning and because the walkway is a bit away from the actual beach it was safe to do those bridal photos without Chris seeing her before she walked down the aisle.

Romantic beach wedding at Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island. The couple from Germany eloped to Florida to make their dream of a beach wedding come true.

Coquina Beach Wedding
Photography

This year the month of May was challenging for outdoor weddings. We had so much rain that month. I don’t think I have seen anything like it in 20 years. The days prior to the wedding have been a bit stressful for both of them as we already discussed various backup plans. It didn’t look good for a beach wedding. As the date got closer the weather forecast looked better and better. We decided the day prior to go for the original plan and a beach wedding and just move the ceremony time a bit earlier.

Blue sky, turquoise water, and much sunshine greeted us that day. We started with getting ready for photos with the guys and girls. Her colors were a soft peach and white and a light blue tailored suit for him. I love the combination, so romantic and perfect for photos on the beach. Family and friends shared this special day with them. I am so happy all worked out in the end and they looked so beautiful together. I had much fun taking their photos. Thank you for letting me capture your special day.

Congratulations to Conny and Rene who married at Kraft Azalea Garden on April 18th, 2018. The couple from Vienna, Austria has a second home in Orlando, and Kraft Azalea Gardens was the perfect location for their intimate wedding ceremony. Nestled in an upscale Winter Park residential area, the small garden is a little paradise. Hundreds of birds nest in the beautiful majestic trees, and views of the lake and naturally landscaped walkways offer many photo opportunities. To round it up a monument with columns is a perfect backdrop for the ceremony. Their two dogs attend as best man and maid of honor along with close family and friends. They wanted to keep their wedding simple and meaningful and it was a magical afternoon filled with laughter, love, and happiness. I love Kraft Azalea Garden for wedding photography, there are so many spots in this little garden to take photos. Congratulations to both of you and thank you for letting me be part of your day.
