I had the pleasure to meet and photograph Sonja and Peter’s wedding here in Florida. Sonja always dreamed about a beach wedding so they eloped to Sanibel Island in 2014. Because many of the family and friends could not attend they planned a second church wedding in their home town Lucerne in Switzerland.

Church Wedding in Switzerland
Romance in Lucerne

A few months after their beach wedding in Florida, Sonja called me. She said that she is planning her church wedding in Lucerne, Switzerland and wants to surprise Peter. She asked me if I would be willing to fly to Switzerland and photograph her religious ceremony. I felt so honored and of course I said yes.

Their church wedding was on a beautiful June day at the Jesuit Church in Lucerne. The Landmark  Catholic church is in the center of Lucerne’s old town, overlooking the Reuss River. Like many churches in Europe, it features impressive ceilings and majestic interiors. The couple exchanged their vows in front of family and friends, plus a few tourists who came to see the church ended up standing at the entrance watching the ceremony.

After the ceremony, everybody gathered in front of the church to congratulate Sonja and Peter. The following Apéro (Cocktails and Appetizers) was served at the prestigious Hotel des Balances across the river.  It is a short walk from the church to the hotel. On the way, we got the chance to take some photos with the famous Chapel Bridge in the background.

Once we arrived at the Hotel we were treated to a glass or 2 of champagne and a million-dollar view of the old town of Lucerne and the river. After some drinks and butlered hors d’oeuvres, it was time to depart to the reception that was held at the Meggenhorn castle.

Sonja and Peter drove very (un)traditionally in Sonja’s favorite car. Her classic Fiat 500. We had a lot of fun getting her and the dress into this tiny car.

INTIMATE couple PHOTO SESSION the day before the wedding

Two hour pre wedding photography with the bride and groom at Castle Meggenhorn. We decided to have a pre wedding photo session the day before to make fully use of the beautiful location. Peter had already seen  Sonja wear the dress at their  Florida beach wedding, so it just made perfect sense to do a pre wedding session. This way they could also fully enjoy their day with family and friends. We took quite some time and tried out many poses that would have not been possible on the wedding day with a somewhat strict timeline.

Kaitlin and Mikes’s autumn destination wedding to the fairytale castle Neuschwanstein in Germany.  Nestled in the picturesque Allgäu Alps the eccentric King Ludwig II  built Neuschwanstein castle which was the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella castle. Right across you find Hohenschwangau castle which is King Ludwig’s childhood residence.  Both castles are historically protected and you can not get married there directly.

Fairytale Destination Wedding at Neuschwanstein Castle
I travel Worldwide

You can find first class hotels in the area but also plenty of other accommodations to choose from for you and your guests to stay. Kaitlin and Mike chose to celebrate their ceremony and reception at the Castle Bullachberg. The little hunting castle is beautifully decorated and offers a selection of rooms and apartments. They also have a small chapel that can be used for non legal weddings for groups with 15 or less people.

Kaitlin and Mike flew in from the US and arrived the day prior by train from Munich. They booked rooms in the castle Bullachberg and all available apartments for their guests. Whilst the actual ceremony and reception were planned at Castle Bullachberg, the rehearsal took place at Alpenrose on the Alpsee in the village of Hohenschwangau. The former restaurant is now an Ameron hotel and resort but is still available for events. I met Kaitlin and Mike at the rehearsal location for a pre-wedding and rehearsal photo shoot and at the same time got a chance to meet and greet.

We took photos at the beautiful Alpsee with their family and friends and some candid shots at the dinner. Their food selection was inspired by a King Ludwig II recipe and of course plenty of beer and wine. With a view of Castle Neuschwanstein and Castle Hohenschwangau which are lit at night, it was truly a great start to the path of forever.

The village of Hohenschwangau can be busy during the day since many daily tour buses will arrive with visitors from all over the world. However, in the evening the village turns into a quiet retreat.

We started with an early morning on the day of the wedding. The ceremony was planned for 1 pm and we had a full day planned ahead of us. I started the getting ready photos with the girls and detail shots at 8:00 a.m. The hunting castle is really beautifully maintained and the surrounding area just inspires. There are so many spots for photos. At around 10:00 am I went to meet the guys and guests for a planned Bavarian Wedding Breakfast with white sausage, pretzels, and of course beer! Mike had the honor to tap the beer kegs and Alphorn players entertained the guests. Kaitlin and Mike kept their wedding true to the Bavarian culture and included authentic decoration,  music, and meals.

After some photos at the breakfast, I went for the getting-ready photos with the dudes (Burschen). I returned to the bride for the final getting photos with her and her bridesmaids and some portraits before she walked down the aisle.

We had a truly magnificent autumn day with sunshine and clear skies. The ceremony was held on the front lawn with a view of Castle Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein in the distance. The location and views are truly breathtaking. After Kaitlin’s and Mike’s I do’s they invited to a champagne toast and mingling. I took the opportunity to do all the formal and group photos at that time.

All the guests got picked up by a bus transport to go for a private guided tour through Neuschwanstein Castle while I went with the bride and groom for the intimate photo shoot. We booked a 2-hour horse and carriage ride which is not only romantic but also perfect to get around town and get to those special spots for photos.

After the private photo tour, we all met back up for the dinner reception at Castle Bullachberg. A Bavarian Band was booked for entertainment and first dances and the evening ended by sending the couple off with sparklers.

The couple continued their honeymoon by visiting the Octoberfest a few days later.

Thank you so much for flying me in to capture your wedding day, I am truly honored to have been a part of your fairytale destination wedding at Neuschwanstein Castle.

Post wedding shoot neuschwanstein caslte

This was an actual post-wedding photo session at Neuschwanstein Castle. The couple from Florida got married in Paris and vacationed in Germany some months later. They love the Neuschwanstein castle and booked my photography service to get some portraiture done.  The day started bright and early with a hair and makeup service in their hotel in Hohenschwangau. We tried to be as early as possible up at the castle Neuschwanstein to avoid as much as possible the crowd and many tour buses that arrive all day with visitors. We took the regular horse and carriage shuttle service up to the castle parking spot and walked the rest. We took some photos directly at the castle and the areas that are accessible without having a ticket. Photography is not allowed inside the castle so we covered as many spots as possible outside. We walked up the paved road to the Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge).  The uphill walk can be exhausting especially in formal attire but you get rewarded with one of the best views of the castle. The bridge is suspended 295 feet over the river and has nothing for the faint or those with problems with heights. Luckily we were early enough to get some photos without hundreds of tourists.  At the other end of the bridge climbing up a very steep rocky mountain pathway, there is another fantastic spot for photos. At the groom’s request, we did the climb up there and honestly, unless you have hiking shoes on and are used to climbing in the wilderness it is not recommended. It is very steep with rocks and only roots to hold on to.  I still don’t know how the bride managed to get up there with her wedding gown. I told them if anybody asks me again to climb up there for photos they have to buy extreme sports insurance coverage for me, lol.  After we had managed to get down the mountain we took the shuttle bus back to the village. From there we took another horse and carriage to Hohenschwangau castle. We took photos there with some more beautiful views of the surrounding area. The last stop was the grassy pastures below the castle. What an exciting day but honestly all of us were pretty exhausted.  To cover all the spots we did including climbing up and down, carriage, and bus ride you should calculate 5 hours of photo time and start early in the morning. So something like that is only possible as a pre or post-wedding photo session.

As an elopement and destination photographer, I always feel super inspired by couples like Taylor and Sarah. The Steampunk couple not only wanted to be uniquely dressed for their wedding day they also chose a one-of-a-kind location. Neuschwanstein Castle is a breathtaking backdrop for photos. On the wedding day, we had to make a few arrangements and almost thought that the ceremony would have to take place inside. While we had rain all morning and in Germany, this may not be a good sign, we were able to hold their ceremony outside. For this specific wedding, I thought that the thick clouds hanging in the sky gave an extra dramatic effect to their Steampunk-inspired wedding.  I found it very fitting and worked out great. We had a few more sprinkles of rain during the photo session but the black umbrella ( usually not ideal for a wedding) was a perfect accessory. We took photos in the grassy area below the castle and visited Hohenschwangau Castle for more photos. The walk up there is on a paved road but can be steep. However, you get rewarded with beautiful views of the Alpsee and the woods. Imagine how that was before the streets were paved! Thank you Taylor and Sarah for choosing me as your photographer. I was truly inspired by you.
